Of Monsters and Men

Image
After non-stop adventures on our first full day in Tokyo... ...Keith and I wanted a quiet nightcap. So we ventured up to a peaceful oasis in the middle of Harajuku... ...the Kawaii Monster Cafe. Upon arrival, we were told that we were heading into this monster's mouth and stomach... ...via a red carpet/tongue which I did not get a photo of because my brain was over-stimulated and short circuiting.  Once inside, I learned the true meaning of over-stimulation. As dance music blared, the neon guts of this monster took on a life of their own. A drag performer greeted us and walked us to our table... ...where we ordered something called the "Druggy Cocktail," which arrived with some test tubes, and instructions. We were to pour the red one first, then the blue.  "If the colors separate, your experiment is a success." My experiment was, in fact, a success... Whereas Keith was clearly drinkin

We managed to survive the MarioKart tour of doom. Yes it was terrifying for the first 5 minutes or so...but all in all it was one of the coolest things we have done on a trip. Definitely worth doing if you are ever in Tokyo. After MarioPerish it was time to continue with the shenanigans. Another thing to know about Tokyo is that they love all sort of cafes here. They have cat cafes where you can play with a bunch of cats. There is a Vampire cafe...a snake cafe...(no Jeff I am not EVER going there)...Apparently there is a 'boys love academy' cafe. I will not go into detail other than it's meant for creepy old dudes of the big gay homo variety.... Anyhoo, now that you are thoroughly skeeved out...on with the post! Jeff navigated us to an office building type place in the middle of the Harajuku district... The Harajuku movement is sort of like a CosPlay kinda deal with people dressing up in all sorts of costumes. I'm sure there is a significance to it an

After our flight landed... ...Keith and I somehow managed to find our way through the (very efficient) airport, where I immediately felt at home. We also managed to get to our hotel without getting super lost! Go, us... ...literally. But you're not here for me to talk about toilets.  (There's plenty of time for that later...) This city can be overwhelming, so for our first full day in Tokyo, I was looking for a way for us to get a lay of the land.  So we took in some culture... (For more culture, see Keith's Post! ) ...and then found our way to MariCar... ...A real, non-copyright infringing pile of pure fun that is definitely NOT a way to see Tokyo through the eyes of a panicked person driving a go-kart on real, actual roads without a seat belt while wearing ridiculous costumes. The 200 Yen anyone has ever spent. Why would you even think that? Since landing, I've been comparing Tokyo to a video game--and
